What Are Legal Translation Services?

Legal translation is the process of translating legal documents with full consideration of their legal meaning, context, and jurisdictional requirements. Unlike general translation, legal translation requires absolute accuracy, familiarity with legal terminology, and adherence to local laws.

Key areas of legal translation include:

  • Corporate law
  • Contracts & agreements
  • Litigation & court judgments
  • Immigration documents
  • Patents & trademarks
  • Regulatory documents

Whether it’s translating legal contracts for a global deal or preparing documents for court proceedings, precision is essential. Our legal linguists specialize in understanding not just the words but the legal nuances that make your documents effective.

Why Accuracy and Confidentiality Are Crucial in Legal Translations

In the legal field, errors can lead to costly consequences. A mistranslated contract could result in a breach of agreement, a wrongfully translated court order could delay legal proceedings, or a poorly translated privacy policy could lead to compliance issues and lawsuits. At Attached, we understand the risks.

  • Compliance issues: Legal translations must align with local laws, regulations, and standards to ensure they are enforceable.
  • Confidentiality: Sensitive legal documents require careful handling to prevent breaches of privacy. We take security seriously, ensuring that all documents are processed under strict GDPR compliance and confidentiality agreements.
  • Financial consequences: A small mistake can lead to significant financial loss or reputational damage. We ensure that all translations are precise and legally sound, mitigating these risks.

We prioritize the security of your legal data and maintain confidentiality at every stage of the translation process.

Translation vs. Localization in Legal Contexts

While translation and localization are often used interchangeably, in the legal world, each serves a distinct purpose.

  • Translation: Converting legal content from one language to another, preserving the exact legal meaning and structure. Used for contracts, court judgments, or terms and conditions.
  • Localization: Adapting content to fit the legal, cultural, and formatting norms of the target region. For example, when translating user agreements for different countries, localization may be necessary to adjust the language for local legal practices or regulatory requirements.
  • Legal nuance: Localization also applies to formatting differences, such as date and numeric notation, formats, legal references, or jurisdictional terms that vary across regions.

At Attached, we customize our approach based on the document type, ensuring that all legal content meets the specific needs of the target jurisdiction.

Questions & Answers

What is the difference between translation and localization?

The terms translation and localization are often used interchangeably. While the terms and processes indeed share similarities, understanding what sets them apart can do a lot to help you really reach your target audience.

Translation is the process of changing an original (source) language version of content into a different (target) language by substituting words in one language for those of another – in context.

Localization is a more specialized process of adapting your content and applications for regional – or local – consumption. It goes beyond translation by modifying the source language and other copy and design elements to appeal to local customers’ cultural preferences in their own target language.

Is translation technology the same as Google Translate?

There are many different types of translation technology: machine translation (such as Google Translate), CAT (computer-assisted translation) tools, automated quality assurance tools, etc. So NO, translation technology is not the same as Google Translate.

With some types of technology, no human intervention takes place to do the work, whereas other tools merely assist human translators to do their work more efficiently and consistently.

Who will be working on my texts?

Great people! Our native professional translators, the majority of whom also work and live in the country of their native language.

By working with in-country linguists, we can follow the developments of the local language from the inside and ensure the use of current day wordings in our translations. Thanks to our advanced translation management system, we can easily connect with all our translators and copywriters across the globe and keep each other updated on the jobs we are working on.

It goes without saying that all new linguists who work for us are carefully screened and tested before they become part of the team.
